Autumn Polichnitos Pans

It was salt harvesting time for the Polichnitos Salt Pans on Sunday and I very much enjoyed seeing birds and people side-by-side, once again. A sunny day, perfect for birdwatching:

170 Pied Avocets (Recurvirostra avocetta)- yes, only a few (c. 20) around the Kalloni Pans by now

6 Black Storks (Ciconia nigra) and 50+ Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus)

4 Greenshanks (Tringa nebularia), 15 Redshanks (T. totanus)

22 Sandwich Terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis)

10+ Mediterranean (Ichthyaetus melanocephalus), 17+ Slender-billed (Chroicocephalus genei) , and 35+ Black-headed (C. ridibundus) Gulls

Also 5+ Grey Herons, 4+ Little White and 3 Great White Egrets

1 Common Buzzard and 1 Sparrowhawk

Black Redstarts are here (had my very first a day before by the Kalloni Pans!), the place is packed with Robins (for 3rd week now) and I also heard my 1st overwintering Sardinian Warbler.

Nifida Marsh is half full (no birds but Cetti’s Warblers) but Alikoudi is still completely dry…
