Lesvos BIRD NEWS

The 2025 REPORT of the Hellenic Bird Ringing Centre is out. It is in Greek, but the photos would be interesting to have a look at (click on this link). The Lesvos ringings are on pages 10 & 11.

To translate some important parts:

We ringed 210 birds in 2025, belonging to 34 species. The most common ones were the Robin (Erithacus rubecula), the Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon), the Cetti’s Warbler (Cettia cetti) and the Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), but we had very special species such as the Cinereous Bunting (Emberiza cineracea), Cretzschmar’s Bunting (E. caesia), Western Rock Nuthatch (Sitta neumayer), Rock Sparrow (Petronia petronia) and Sombre Tit (Poecile lugubris). Also 10 White Strok (Ciconia ciconia) chicks from the nests around the Kalloni Gulf and 11 Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) chicks from their nests in the Polichnitos Salt Pans were ringed.

Our highlight recovery was of a MOUSTACHED WARBLER (Acrocephalus melanopogon) ringed in the area of the Danube River Delta (Romania), to be recaptured in Dipi reedbed (Gera Gulf) 16 days later, on Nov 2, 2025
