From the field: Kalloni Pans & surroundings, 11 August 2026

Sunshine/ 25 – 33 °C/ NE wind, 3- 4 B

7:15-10:30 / 62 bird species in total – 5 of them heard only

Based in Agia Paraskevi for a few days I took down the track from the village to the Kalloni Pans. I planned to get to the pans as soon as possible but I made the “mistake” to get out of the car to better photograph a pair of Woodchat Shrikes… I kept finding so many lovely birds that I spent half an hour there:

3 Cirl Buntings- a singing male!

3 Greenfinches, 10 Goldfinches

1 Eastern Orhean Warbler

1 Eastern Sub-alpine Warbler

1 Lesser Whitethroat (yeah! migration)

2 Sombre Tits

2 juv Masked Shrikes

2 ad Woodchat Shrikes – continuing on the track gave 3 more pairs (male/female) Woodchat Shrikes and 3 juv birds

Western Rock and Eurasian Nuthatches (heard only), Chaffinches, Crested Larks, Corn Buntings etc.

Jackdaws (*Corvus monedula*) are not a common in the center of the island! And a Hooded Crow (*Corvus cornix*).

18 Dalmatian Pelicans, 30+ Cormorants

8 Spoonbills, 1 Black Stork

15 juv. Greater Flamingos

106 Pied Avocets, 19 Black-winged Stilts

5 Stone Curlews

2 Curlews, 2 Grey Plovers

1 Kentish & 11 Little Ringed Plovers

10 Little Stints

23 Redshanks, 2 Greenshanks

13 Slender-billed & 41 Black-headed Gulls

25+ Little & 13+ Common Terns

1 Common Buzzard

2 Short-toed Eagles (foraging in the area between the pans and the sea)

1 Whinchat (yeah! migration)

4 Yellow Wagtails- 3 were the feldeg (breeding here race), 1 was not (yeah! migration)

Dalmatian Pelicans, Cormorants, Black-headed Gulls and greater Flamingos.

Common Shelduck with chicks (*Tadorna tadorna*)

Little Ringed Plover (*Thinornis dubius*)

Black-winged Stilts, adult & juv (*Himantopus himantopus*)

Short-toed (Snake) Eagles (*Circaetus gallicus*)

Barn Swallows (*Hirundo rustica*) foraging on the ground!

Yellow Wagtail (*Motacilla flava*), not a feldeg race

Lotzaria track to Tsiknias river ford

1 Honey Buzzard (in a filed next to the river)

1 Common Kestrel (with a Corn Bunting as prey!)

Crested Larks, Corn Buntings, House Sparrows etc.

I returned to the SW corner of the Kalloni Pans and had a Honey Buzzard fly over me by Hide 2! I am not sure if it was the same bird I had earlier by the Tsiknias river or not…
