Fair but windy weather these days. Swifts and hirundines (also Sand Martins) are making a notable passage but also Black-headed Buntings are seen in small flocks. The first day with only a few Ruffs and Wood Sandpipers around… not to mention the back to “normal” numbers of Red-backed Shrikes.

15 Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster)- flew over at medium height

50+ Swifts (Apus apus) – passing in several small flocks

2+ Ruppel’s Warblers (Sylvia rueppelli)- male and female providing to nest

2+ Sub-alpine Warblers (Sylvia cantillans)- male and female providing to nest

1 Orphean Warbler (Sylvia crassirostris)- a male, foraging

1 Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala)- a male singing out in the open for some time

1 Crag Martin (Ptyonoprogne rupestris) – flying in front of the shore cliff

1 Blue Rock Thrush- a male by the shore cliff

1 Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficolis)

100+ Yellow Legged Gulls (Larus michahellis)

5+ Sub-alpine Warblers (Sylvia cantillans)- among them one pair providing to its nest

1 Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), 1 Marsh Harrier (Circus aeroginosus)

Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus)- a very bold singing male

Little Owl (Athene noctua)- by the barn SW of the ford

KALLONI SALT PANS

Corner pool above the main road nearly dry by now. All Black-winged Stilt nests abandoned and new nests are now by the Salt Pans’ canal (mainly on islet there).

2 Little Ringed Plovers (Charadrius dubius), 4 Kentish Plovers (Ch. alexandrinus)

1 Ruff (Philomachus pugnax), 3 Wood Sandpipers (Tringa glareola)

3 Yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava feldegg)

Also Flamingos, Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Common and Little Terns. Black-headed Buntings and Olivaceus Warblers easy to hear/find.
