Last year it undoubtedly rained too much for the island. This year’s winter brought average rain at the beginning of the season that was followed by weeks of intense north winds that have greatly wiped away humidity.

At the moment, there is literally NO free surface of water in the southwest parts (opposite the Saltworks entrance), my favorite birding spot for spring migration. Let’s hope for some real rain and better condition to come from now on…

If you are wondering about the Common Crane (Grus grus), it was still present on January 19 visit and seemed to have a great time hanging around with the Ruddy Shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea)!!
