Was around the northern coastal wetlands of the Kalloni Gulf (Tsiknias to Messa) all morning yesterday- together with Stelios Zannetos- and had some very interesting bird sightings the highlights of which were:
MESSA:
1 Hoopoe (Upupa epops)
KALLONI SALT PANS:
10 Avocets (Recurvirostra avocetta)
1 White Stork (Ciconia ciconia)
2 Marsh Harriers (Circus aeroginosus)
11 Yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava, mostly M.f.feldeg subspecies and singles of M.f.xanthophrys and M.f. superciliaris)
6 Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica)
20 House Martins (Delichon urbicum)
KALLONI GULF SEA
30 Yelkouan Shearwaters (Puffinus yelkuan)
200+ Garganeys (Anas querquedula)
55+ Ferruginous Ducks (Aythya nyroca)

The resident birds’ species are in full breeding mode (Crested Larks, Corn Buntings, Black Birds, Tits, Chaffinches) but we are clearly missing the visiting breeders- except the House Martins that are well back in their nests on the buildings above the Kalloni Pans!
